I made a repeat trip to Oatley Park for my exercise walk. My previous trip had been very good for exercise – the tracks were not crowded and there had been a fair bit to see. But my bird photography and not been that good. I was hoping to do better this visit.
I started earlier, first visiting the wetlands of Lime Kiln Bay. A few smaller birds were including some migratory honeyeaters. But my attention was turned to some larger birds. First a Satin Bowerbird –
And a Chestnut Teal –
There was also one Royal Spoonbill –
I bumped into another bird photographer and we had a brief chat. He told me about a Rose Robin he had seen.
The only small bird I photographed was a Grey Fantail –
I then continued on the Frog Hollow and went up the track towards the Traction Engine. On the way I tuned off and followed a track on the left. It led back through nice forest to the sports oval at the park entrance. Some birds along the way – a Noisy Miner, a Red Wattlebird, and a Grey Butcherbird –
I then headed downhill towards the bay on the east side.
Along the track to the swimming area and Castle, I spotted some nice small birds. First a Golden Whistler –
Then a Brown Thornbill –
And a Fairy-wren –
I then continued past the swimming area along the track around the headland. I paused a few times on the way to photograph some of the birds. I then made a circuit around the top of the hill to Websters Lookout and the second lookout, where I stopped for lunch.
Spotted Pardalote –
Golden Whistler –
Brown Thornbill –
Yellow-faced Honeyeater –
And a Grey Fantail –
I then went back to the wetlands. This time more birds were out.
Eastern Spinebills –
Australasian Grebes –
And there was a family of Chestnut Teals –
I then followed the track on the west side. I found some nice Variegated Fairy-wrens –
I then walked back via the Wetlands. But it was a lot quieter now. So – time to leave. It had been a pleasant visit.
