Wolli Creek Nature Walk – 31 May 2020

I had a pleasant walk from Bexley North to Tempe. Along the Two Valleys Track I was on the lookout for mainly birds and fungi.

Along the way I didn’t see too many birds (I probably heard more, but they were hiding), but I did spot some nice fungi. One of the birds I got a glimpse of was this Brown Goshawk

And I also saw a Golden Whistler

I was almost at Bardwell Park, when I came across a nice area of fungi. Many years ago, I had seen some coral fungi growing here, so I always take a bit more trouble to carefully look around to see what is growing there. One year, in 2016, I was amazed to see a large cluster of waxcaps – Hygrocybe aurantipes out. And then, nearby I spotted another large cluster. They were Hygrocybe cheelii. These are both relatively rare to see, so I had been looking to see if they had reappeared each subsequent season. They had not, until now. First I spotted the bright red colour of Cruentomycena viscidocruenta

And a Pluteus lutescens growing on a log –

Then I saw that the large cluster of Hygrocybe aurantipes had returned –

Nearby were some corals –

And a few red waxcaps. This one is Hygrocybe collucera with its golden yellow gills –

Here is a polypore growing on the ground –

And there were lots of Hygrocybe austropratensis

And the Hygrocybe cheelii were back –

I was very pleased to see the return of these waxcaps.

I continued downstream. I didn’t see too much f]more out. Some Greenhood Orchids and some more corals and jellies –
