Back to Malabar Headland – 20 October 2020

This trip to check the status of the Peregrine Falcons was with Valerie and Sue.

On the walk out, near he carpark at Maroubra Beach we spotted pair of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos.

And here is one of the many Superb Fairy-wrens on the walk out to Boora Point –

As we walked out, I spotted a Peregrine Falcon flying at high speed towards Malabar. It looked like it had gone on a hunting mission.

But not long after we arrived at their nesting spot, a Falcon flew over and perched on a ledge. I don’t know if this was he one that we had seen having returned or its mate.

I missed it taking off.

It landed on another ledge, and then stayed there for a while – several hours!

A few times it did signs that it may take-off, but it would settle back down.

During this wait, we kept a watch for whales. We only saw one pass by – and it was a long way out.

Some more stretching – but it still didn’t take-off.

We watched a Great Cormorant in the sea below – it took al go while to take-off from the water.

More stretching, but again it settled back down.

Then an Osprey flew past. I grabbed a few shots.

I had been caught exactly this way before. By the time I looked at the Peregrine Falcon, it had taken off to harass the Osprey.

I flew a long way out to sea.

But I knew it would return soon, and it did. I was ready to get it flying back.

After that, we didn’t feel like waiting longer, and we decide to walk around the headland to Malabar and return to Maroubra via the western track.

It had been a nice day out – but still no chicks are visible.
