Birds and Fungi at Sydney Park – 23 March 2021

The rain had stopped! During the afternoon the rain eased and then stopped. I was keen to go outdoors, so decided to visit he nearby Sydney Park.

I was pleased on this visit to spot a Brown Quail. It was a single bird. WhenI have seen Brown Quails before – they have usually been in a group. So I expect there to be more of them about.

The single remaining Eurasian Coot chick seem to be doing OK –

And here is a Masked Lapwing –

But what stood out more at the Park was the fungi. A lot was out after all the rain – particularly Stinkhorns. Of two species.

Lysurus mokusin

Phallus rubicundus

And here are some Phallus rubicundus “eggs” – the structures the stinkhorn emerges from.

The ones below look similar but are Puffballs

And some of the other fungi –

The last two photos are of Earth Stars, a type of puffball. But these ones are a less common type – they ave multiple holes where the spores are released rather than the usual one hole.  They are the “Pepper Pot” Earth Stars. These ones are Myriostoma australianum (recently reclassified from Myriostoma coliforme).
