Camping Weekend at Asgard Swamp 17 – 18 April 2021

We had a birthday to celebrate, and the campsite at Asgard Swamp had been chosen as a suitable venue. Its a short walk from the Victoria Falls Road at Mt Victoria and once there, its a great place to laze about, or to go on side trips.

I travelled to Mt Victoria with Valerie and Jenni, and we met up with Dave Oz at the carpark. We then set off on the short walk to the Asgard Swamp campsite.

We were the first there, so we set up our tents, gathered some firewood and collected water. Then Keith arrived. After lunch, some of us set off for a short walk up to Asgard Head. We climbed up from the campsite and followed an open ridge to a great vantage spot overlooking Victoria Falls.

There was a fair bit of mist – and that added to the atmosphere making it nice and moody.

Here is a telephoto shot of Victoria Falls –

Back at the campsite, we then decided to visit Thor Head.

I stayed on top till sunset.

Back at camp, all the rest of the party had arrived and we had a great time around the campfire sharing food and drink. It was now a nice clear starry night.

Next morning, I got up early and joined John and Seby for a walk up Thor Head for dawn.

Then back down to the Swamp for breakfast.

Our next side trip – was a walk to the nearby McKenzie Mine.

And here is the Coke Oven –

Here are some of the birds I had seen on the weekend –

Grey Shrike-thrush

Spotted Pardalote

Grey Fantail

Scarlet Robins

Buff-rumped Thornbill

Crimson  Rosella

Fan-tailed Cuckoo

White-throated Treecreeper

After lunch, we gradually packed up and started walking out. Before heading home however, some of us did the short walk out towards Ikara Head to see if the pink Flannel Flowers were still out.

They were. But they were well past their prime.

On the walk back, I saw this nice Mustard-bellied Snake –

It had been a great weekend and it was good to catch up with friends. And special thanks to Jenni for a lift up and back.
