Birds at the Central Coast Wetlands – 19 April 2021

It had been a while since my last visit to the Central Coast Wetlands at the old Pioneer Dairy at Wyong. I travelled to Wyong by train and then walked the short distance to the Wetlands.

I first looked in the ponds to see what waterbird were present. Here are some of the waterbirds I saw throughout the day –

Great Egret

Intermediate Egret

I thought the bird below was an Australian Shelduck. Oops! Thanks to Nina’s comment below, I can see I made an egregious mistake.

Royal Spoonbill

Australian Swamphens

Australasian Darters

Cattle Egrets

Australasian Grebe

Some of the birds around the hinterlands of the wetlands –

  1. Nina Dowden says:

Afraid the ‘Australian Shelduck’ is a domestic duck of Mallard ancestry. Australian Shelducks are mostly dark black or brown with chestnut breasts, and no curled tail feathers at the rear end.
