More Fungi Near Chatswood – 15 June 2021

Recent rain and cold weather meant it was a good time to look for waxcaps. I headed up to Chatswood and then walked down to Ferndale Park. The fungi was better then I had hoped for – a lot was out, and I spent more time there than I intended. I then walked to Blue Gum Reserve and found the fungi there very good as well. After that I walked down the track to the Lane Cove River and after a late lunch walked upstream along the river to check out another site.

The third site was not as good for waxcaps, but it was quite good for coral fungi.

Here is some of what I saw –

Ferndale Park

First, some of the waxcaps –

Hygrocybe reesiae

Gliophorus chromolimoneus

Gliophorus graminicolor

I think these ones are Hygrocybe lanecovensis

And this one could be Hygrocybe cantherellus

The may be Hygrocybe miniata

Hygrocybe stevensoniae

Humidicutis sp.

Hygrocybe griseoramosa –

Gliophorus viscidibrunnea –

Hygrocybe austropratensis –

Hygrocybe leucogloea –

Hygrocybe anomala –

That is a good selection of waxcaps!

Cuphophyllopsis sp.

Now for some coral fungi.

First Clavaria zollingeri

Clavicorona taxophila –

And two species going on the same rotten log –

The second is very small –

Clavulinopsis corallinorosacea –

It was quite gloomy in the rainforest, and I did not spot the pink fungus on the right. I think it may be the Humidicutis sp. seen above in its earlier green colour.

Mycena sp. –

Gymnopus eucalyptorum –

Perhaps Postia sp. –

Cortinarius rotundisporus –

Blue Gum Reserve

This too was better than I expected. I could have spent a lot more time here. I almost exclusively photographed only waxcaps.

Hygrocybe reesiae –

Hygrocybe anomala –

The ones with no lilac tints in the cap are Hygrocybe anomala var. anomala and the ones with it are Hygrocybe anomala var. ianthinomarginata.

Gliophorus graminicolor –

Hygrocybe aurantiopallens

Hygrocybe lilaceolamellata –

Perhaps Hygrocybe batesii

Hygrocybe stevensoniae –

Humidicutis sp.

Hygrocybe miniata –

Hygrocybe apricosa –

Hygrocybe austropratensis –

Hygrocybe aurantipes –

And here is one coral –

Clavulinopsis sp.

Lane Cove River –

Most of these photos were taken in in small patch of rainforest near the Lane Cove River. This is the spot where I sometimes see Gliophorus psittacinus. I had seen it on previous recent visits, but now it seems to have all gone. My observations of it over a few years are that it reappears in the same spot each season, and only occurs for a short period – perhaps only 2 weeks.  The time of year it does appear can vary from May to July and probably depends on rainfall and temperature. Near this spot can often be found a lot of very tiny coral fungi. A lot of them don’t seem to be described.

Ramariopsis simplex –

Clavulinopsis sp.

I am not sure what these next ones are. Growing on soil. The first ones have a pale base, the second ones have a brown base. Perhaps Ramariopsis sp.

Ramariopsis sp. –

Ramariopsis sp. –

Ramariopsis crocea –

And away from the others, was this Ramaria sp. –

This is the only waxcap I spotted in this area –

Hygrocybe austropratensis –

Cortinarius rotundisporus –

Phellodon niger –

Austropaxillus muelleri –

This had been a truly excellent day.
