Fungi (and rain) at Bola Creek, then Whales and Birds at Wattamolla – 22 June 2021

I joined Digi Dave for a pleasant day in Royal National Park. Our intention was to look for fungi at Bola Creek, and that was where we started, but after an hour or so, it starts raining, and the rain seemed to become steady, so we decided to head to Wattamolla where is necessary, we could shelter under overhangs if the rain persisted.

At Bola Creek, the fungi was very good. We soon found a lot of interesting waxcaps. Here are some –

Hygrocybe sp. –

Hygrocybe cantherellus –

Hygrocybe sp. –

Hygrocybe anomala var. anomala –

Hygrocybe aurantiopallens –

Gliophorus graminicolor –

Hygrophorus involutus –

Hygrocybe virginea –

Hygrocybe helicoides –

Hygrocybe aurantipes –

Porpolomopsis lewelliniae –

And I only photographed one non waxcap, a Mycena sp.

Now to Wattamolla. We walked out to Providential Point and then found a nice rock to sit on and waited for action.

The first thing to happen was a juvenile White-bellied Sea Eagle. Ir flew past heading north.

It landed near this headland. I spotted another bird perched on he cliffs that I thought was it, but then saw the juvenile take-off and keep going north.

We did see a few Humpback Whales.

Here is a pod of four –

But no breaching or tail slapping. Meanwhile, the perched Sea Eagle looked like is was found to fly –

It flew our way. It was an adult White-bellied Sea Eagle –

It flew past and we didn’t see it again. We waited a while for more whales, then decided it was time to head for home. A pleasant day out, and thanks to Digi Dave for driving to the National Park.
