Birds at Sydney Park – 3 August 2021

Day 38 of lockdown. For my afternoon exercise, I walked to Sydney Park at St Peters and back. At the park, I looked around to see what birds where there.

I soon spotted the Black Swan family.

Thye wewte in the Island pond. In the bottom pond were some Australasian Grebes.

I was able to get photos of one actually flying. These birds are reluctant fliers.

Here is one of the Hardheads

And some Welcome Swallows were buzzing around –

Back at the Island Pond – here is a White-faced Heron

And a Little Pied Cormorant

I met Stuart, another birdwatcher. He had visited the park recently and seen some Lewin’s Rails. I too was on the lookout for one. However, all was saw was a Buff-banded Rail

We watched it for about 20 minutes. It was in the place that Stuart had seen the Lewin’s Rails on previous late afternoons . Perhaps the presence of the much larger Buff-banded Rail kept the Lewins’s Rail away? We later heard one in a different spot – but, this shy bird did not make an appearance. Here are some more photos of the Buff-banded Rail.
