In the morning, I had been on a bike ride to Barton Park. I decided to do another ride in the late afternoon – to Sydney Park to see if the Rails were still around.
I arrived around 4pm and things were ver quiet for the start. There was no sign of any Rails at the location I had seen them previously. But around 4:45 pm a Buff-banded Rail appeared.
The Buff-banded Rail was around, on and off till I left at 5:50 pm.
But, I was after more photos of a Lewin’s Rail and I thought this trip I had missed out. From about 5:15 pm, I had heard one calling, in the undergrowth, only about 8 m away. But it didn’t come any closer. At one time, I saw two Lewin’s Rails flying a short distance (away from that spot). Far too quick to photograph. It looks like there is at least one breeding pair in the park.
But, when I got home, and looked at my photos, what I though was a second Buff-banded Rail was in fact a Lewin’s Rail.
This bird appeared at around 5:40 pm when it was quite dark. Too dark for me to see clearly what it was.
The Buff-banded Rail made a few more appearances.
