Kingfisher Encounters II – Cooks River Bike Ride – 5 September 2021

Day 71 of lockdown. This was a repeat of the bike ride I had done the day before. And like that day, I was looking out for the Osprey. And like that day, no Osprey was seen, but I did see a Sacred Kingfisher.

I cycled straight down the Cooks River to Waterworth Park without stopping. I did look for Sacred Kingfishers and other birds on my way. Crossing the Cooks River at the bridge near the Prices Highway, I was looking to see if any Sacred Kingfishers were on the rock shelf where I had seen one before. No Kingfisher, but I did spot a Striated Heron.

Like most Striated Heron, as soon as got close with my camera, it took off and flew down the shore.

Then a short time later, a Sacred Kingfisher flew past.

It landed on a concrete block.

I waited for it to take off.

Then another flight.

That was the last I saw of it. I cycled along Cahill Park, and did a circuit around tempe Reserve and back. No Ospreys. No Kingfishers.

Waiting  back near the bridge, I photographed a Great Egret as it flew past.

And some Chestnut Teals.

Here is a Fairy Martin doing some aerobatics.

And another, or the same, Striated Heron

It was getting rather cold and windy, so I love off. At Waterworth Park I bumped into Micheal again. He was on a walk up to Turrella. No Kingfishers there. Here is a Little Pied Cormorant.

And a Royal Spoonbill

I then continued on my way home, but I went via the Boat Harbour to check the status of the Tawny Frogmouth pair. No change. I could only spot one – the female perched close to the nest. But the nest did seem to have more material added recently.
