Tasmania – Mother Cummings Walk – 28 December 2021

This was another walk on the Central Plateau, with the same party that was on the earlier walk. This time Paula was looking for another old mountain hut. Another bushwalker who is relatively old could recall seeing a hut many years ago and had told Paula its rough position.

She had looked for it on a previous walk, with no luck, but had found a cut track that seemed to lead towards where she thought it was. Was the track cut to lead to the hut? We would try and find out.

Our route was via the Mother Cummings Track that starts from the very end of the same road that is used for access to Higgs Track. This is Westrope Road, which I knew well from may trips up Higgs Track. But it also has two other tracks leading from it – Sids Track and Mother Cummings Track.

The Mother Cummings Track climbed steadily through nice Beech forest and later through some Waratahs. It was not too hard to reach the open alpine moors as it started from a relatively high elevation. Once on top – we were in the usual alpine garden.

We made our way towards where Paula had found the cut track.

The track left from some nice campsites. We followed it for about 1 km to a dried up creek. This was where paula thought the hut should have been. We then split up and spent a fair time exploring the area looking for any signs of a hut. We had no luck.

The mystery hut certainly seems to exist. Somewhere. But perhaps not in the ares where we looked. It did not looks like a good hut location with no reliable water source close by.

After our search, we had lunch and then walked back the same way. No hut, but it was nice to see some new country.
