I had the whole day available for some local bird photography. It started at Tempe with the monthly Tempe Birdos Survey. After morning tea, I wandered around a bit more at Tempe Wetlands, then walked down to Barton Park. Then I caught a bus to St Peters and finished the day at Sydney Park. It was quite a good day.
Tempe Birdos Survey
I was in the group that surveyed Tempe Reserve. Here are some of the birds we saw –
Willie Wagtails
These birds seemed to be fighting over territory.
Crested Pigeon
Welcome Swallow
Noisy Miner
A Peregrine Falcon flew high overhead.
And later, while we were having morning tea, another raptor flew overhead. Probably a Collared Sparrowhawk.
And a few more photos –
More Birds at Tempe
These were seen after the survey as the group broke up.
Royal Spoonbill
We had seen Crested Tern flying about during the survey, but now it was hunting for fish.
I next headed to Tempe Wetlands by myself. Here is an Australasian Grebe –
Anda Dusky Moorhen family –
On the way to Barton Park, I saw this Striated Heron flying near the Princes Highway.
And this White-faced Heron was hunting on the foreshore in Cahill Park.
Barton Park
First at the Landing Lights Wetland. Here are some Australian White Ibis.
Royal Spoonbill
Pied Stilts
White-faced Heron
Higher up, a Silvereye –
And some Welcome Swallows flying over a muddy puddle.
Then down to the end of the Spring Street Canal. The Striated Heron was out hunting, so I sat down to watch.
It is amazing how these birds can stretch their necks.
It then gets down low ready to strike.
The fish is soon swallowed. The bird is ready for more.
This fish is bigger.
It then flies off. I think it was filling its crop to feed young.
I look around a bit more, but the rest of the park is quiet, so I have lunch then catch a bus to Sydney Park.
Sydney Park
Tawny Frogmouths
Pelican
Its bill is filled with tiny fish.
Some Noisy Miners were bathing.
Then a Buff-banded Rail flies across the pond.
Here is an Australasian Grebe –
Some visitors throw in some food and this Eurasian Coot races over.
Here are some Turtles in the Island Pond.
This Black Swan has a hard job paddling with all the water weeds.
One of several large Eels –
And a Turtle –
This Willie Wagtail was hunting –
And these Magpie Larks were after food.
For part of my visit, I had a nice chat with local bird watcher Harold.
