Birds at Tempe and The Cooks River – 9 April 2022

I stared the day by joining the Tempe Birdos for their monthly survey. Then after morning tea, I walked home via the Cooks River.

At Tempe, I joined the group that surveyed the wetlands. It was reasonable quiet. Here are some of the birds we saw –

Australian Swamphen

Pacific Black Duck

The water in the three basins at Tempe Wetlands looked very murky. This is probably due to very badly polluted water entering from the nearby Gateway Project.

Dusky Moorhen

Superb Fairy-wren

Red-browed Finch

Here are a pair of Dusky Moorhen. One is chasing the other.

And at one spot we noticed a lot of small frogs. They are all Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs.

Anda caterpillar.

The off to morning tea at Tempe Reserve and to compare notes with the other group that had surveyed there. On the way, we saw a roosting Flying Fox

While we were having morning tea, a White-necked Heron flew past overhead. These are seldom seen at Tempe.

And later, a more familiar White-faced Heron flew past.

After morning tea, I had a wander around the Reserve. Here is a Welcome Swallow

And a Crested Tern

I also saw a lot more Superb Fairy-wrens.

I the nest off for the Cooks River.  Where Gumbramorra Ck flows into the Cooks River near Tempe Station, I saw a few birds. One was a Little Egret

There was also a Little Pied Cormorant and a White-faced Heron.

And crossing the bridge, I saw a single Little Black Cormorant

At Gough Whitlam Park I had no luck finding the Tawny Frogmouths. And no luck spotting any Striated Herons. But closer to Illawarra Road, I did spot this nice Sacred Kingfisher.
