Greenway Bird Survey – 11 May 2022

This bird survey was not cancelled due to bad weather, and we were fortunate to largely escape any rain. But dark gloomy conditions made photography difficult.

We surveyed from Taverners Hill Light Rail Station to Hawthorne Light Rail Station. It was fairly quiet at Taverners Hill, although I had missed seeing a Spotted Pardalote seen by the people that arrived early. We did see this Spotted Dove with part of an egg.

Perhaps it was getting rid of an old egg shell from its own nest?

Lower down we spotted a Grey Fantail.

Except for the fantail, it was fairly quiet along the Hawthorne Canal on the path to Marion Street. We Kidspot some Fairy-wrens and Wattlebirds.

At Marion Street was watched this juvenile Striated Heron hunting.

Further along, there was no sign of the Sacred Kingfisher. But I spotted the Brown Goshawk perched in its usual tree.

Near the rail corridor was a Grey Butcherbird.

After the survey finished, I stayed a while to watch the Goshawk to see if it would take-off.

At one time, it was being harassed by a Magpie.

But it seemed content to stay on its perch.

After this I headed home.
