Mudlarks – Cooks River Bird Survey – 12 July 2022

Early in the morning, I joined the Mudlarks, surveying the birdlife along the Cooks River. The group met on the Lang Street Bridge at 7:30, and then we proceeded upstream.

Here are some of the birds we saw –

Great Cormorant

Little Corella

Grey Butcherbird

Magpie Lark

Pelican

Little Black Cormorant

From the footbridge near the Boat Harbour, we watched a Pelican take off and fly upstream.

It had been attracted by a Great Cormorant that was struggling to get down its prey. A Little Black Cormorant was also hoping for some spoils.

I am not sure what the Great Cormorant had caught. Perhaps an eel? Whatever it had, it was very hard of the Cormorant to swallow.

Eventually, the Cormorant seemed to get the eel down.

Or did it?

Yes.

We saw a Caspian Tern being harassed by a Masked Lapwing.

At the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands we noticed some of the Australian Swamphens on a window awning –

Pacific Black Duck

Dusky Moorhen with juvenile –

Noisy Miner

Willie Wagtail

As usual, the group finished off with morning tea.

  1. Dear David
I can’t get any of your photos to display – have tried my end by rebooting my computer, shutting programs, refreshing views, etc. Still the photos won’t appear – there’s just a tiny thumbnail icon which won’t open.
    Is this a wordpress problem?
    Thanks!

Thanks Claire for the feedback. Others have been reporting the problem to me directly (email). The problem seemed to be that My website and blog would not load in certain browsers (eg Chrome). I use Apple Safari – and have not experienced any issues. I have been in touch with my hosting service’s technical support and they suggesting changing a setting on an intermediate service – which I have done. So – my website and blog now load OK when I use a Chrome browser on my computer. You may have to clear your cache and cookies (Chrome preferences)?
