Famous Sydney Buildings and a Powerful Owl – 8 September 2022

This post is something different. On a recent trip, we had been talking about Sydney building with nicknames – like Packer’s Pecker. Valerie had mentioned some at UTS – the “Crumpled Paper Bag” and the “Cheese Grater”. I decided to link some of these up on a walk through the city. I then intended to finish at the Royal Botanic Gardens and look for the resident Powerful Owl.

So here are some buildings –

The Cheese Grater

The Crumpled Paper Bag

The Wave

Packer’s Pecker

The Coathanger

The Toaster

The Nuns in a Scrum Building

The Rocket Building

The last photos were taken in the Royal Botanic Garden, and I then looked around for the resident Powerful Owl. I first looked in the usual spot – a Macadamia tree, but could not see it, so looked in some other trees thatI and seen it roost in on previous visits. I had no luck, so I visited the information desk near the shop, The lady there, said she had seen the owl that morning, and it was in the Macadamia tree. So I went back for a better look and eventually spotted it.

And a last photo – above one of the ponds, a Magpie Lark on its nest.

What an interesting theme! Excellent photos too, making some of the names clearer to me. I didn’t know ‘nuns in a scrum’ and it makes total sense. You may have started something here — everyone will have other buildings that should be on a Sydney-wide list (e.g., the ‘Toilet Rolls’ between Manly and Little Manly Cove).
