Rocky Creek Canyon – 28 January 2023

I was heading up to the Blue Mountains for camping weekend with my friend Wendy. Our aim on Saturday was to visit Rocky Creek Canyon. I had been down the canyon with Bob, a few weeks earlier, but as canyons go, it is a relatively easy trip that offers a lot, so was more than happy to experience it again. I also thought that the hot humid weather could create some nice conditions for canyon photography.

We had a great trip. The canyon, as always was a bit cold. But conditions were relatively mild and it was certainly a very welcome refuge from the heat. And there were some nice photographic conditions.

The photos below are mixture of mobile phone shots and those taken with a more serious camera, mostly mounted on a trip. I was using a 16-35 mm f4 lens on a full frame camera.

we quickly went through the upper section to the waterfall. Then into the darker, lower bit. Here conditions were nice with some sun beams.

On of my favourite sections is a dark corridor. The water level in this section changes from time to time. This is mainly due to shifting sand on the bottom of the pool.

The middle of this long pool was quite shallow.

Then around a corner to the last bit of the canyon. This is where I often concentrate on photography.

Wendy swam through to the end of the canyon to find some sun to warm up in, while I set up my tripod.

There can be light beams in this part of the canyon, but on our visit they were appearing upstream. I think this is all due to the time of day – angle of the sun etc.

Then Wendy came back upstream and we both headed back up the canyon.

Some more nice conditions –

And then through the more technical top section with it short climbs and swims.

We had a late lunch at the top of the canyon, enjoying the warm sun. A Water Skink was looking for crumbs.

The walk out was quite pleasant – most of it is in the shade with the beautiful ferns.

On the top of the ridge were a lot of Paper DaisiesCoronidium waddelliae

Thanks to Roger Lembit for this i.d.
