Above Carne Creek 28 – 29 January 2023

After visiting Rocky Creek Canyon, Wendy and myself headed out along a nearby ridge, along an overgrown fire road to look for an old campsite. However the fire road was not only the only thing overgrown, the campsite was completely covered in regrowth. So we ended up camping on a clearing on the fire road.

After a cup of tea, we put up our tents and then set off down to a nearby lookout. This offers very good views of the gorge of Carne Creek.

Here we are looking upstream –

To get the best view you need to climb up onto one of the pagodas.

And there are Pagoda DaisiesLeucochrysum graminifolium

And the view downstream –

Back at camp, we found some shade, but it was very hot and lots of March Flies and the smaller bitey flies (the ones that like to bite your elbow or knuckles) were about. It was too hot to sit in a tent, and applying repellant only helps a bit

At dawn, we walked backdown to the lookout.

Here, Wendy finds some nice flowers to photograph –

After breakfast, we visited some nearby rock formations. A series of large wind eroded overhangs. These features are relatively common in this part of the Northern Blue Mountains.

Wendy spied a smaller cave with a flat floor. It may have once been an occupation cave, so we were keen to examine it for any art.

Wendy found a convenient canyon pass down to lower level where we could access the cave.

The cave was nice, but the wall did not look suitable for artwork – being bit rough, and we could find no stone tools.

It was shaping up to be another very hot day, so we were keen to get back to Wendy’s air conditioned car. And we then headed for home. It had been a very pleasant and interesting weekend. Thanks to Wendy for suggesting the outing and for driving.
