On my previous two trips to Barton Park, I had been successful in photographing one of the Australian Spotted Crakes at the Landing Lights Wetland. But the photos had been poor – taken looking into the light. I decided an afternoon visit might be better. It was. I had nice light, and one of the Crakes did appear twice.
When I arrived, a White-faced Heron had just landed in the Spring St Canal, but it had landed too close to another Heron and they had a bit of “issue”.
While waiting to see if the Australian Spotted Crake would appear, I saw a few other birds.
Superb Fairy-wren
Chestnut Teals
Welcome Swallows
Then the Australian Spotted Crake emerged from the reeds –
It soon vanished into the reeds once more.
Golden-headed Cisticola
Then the Australian Spotted Crake emerged again, and went back, daily slowly, to where it had first appeared.
Yes, it vanished into the hole in the reeds.
Pied Stilt
New Holland Honeyeater
I then went for a walk down the Spring St Canal to where it joins Muddy Creek.
Superb Fairy-wren
Brown Honeyeater
Back at the wetlands, a White-faced Heron.
Brown Quail
Red-browed Finch
Superb Fairy-wren
Royal Spoonbill
New Holland Honeyeater
The light twas starting to deteriorate, so it was time for me to head home.
