Birds, Whales and Dolphins at Long Reef – 30 May 2023

I decided to visit Long Reef – with the aim of photographing Ospreys, and also to keep a lookout for Whales and Dolphins. I had pretty good day.

After walking out to the lookout, I soon spotted a pod of Dolphins enjoying the waves –

And a Nankeen Kestrel few past –

Then some distant Humpback Whales started breeching –

Next, a Great Egret flew past –

It was low tide, so I walked down onto the rock platform. I saw a distant White-bellied Sea Eagle

A Reef Egret was foraging –

Now for the small migratory birds. Some Red-necked Stints

White-faced Heron

Ruddy Turnstones

Double-banded Plover

I then headed back up to the lookout to have lunch. I was nearly finished when an Osprey appeared. it was one of two.

Another bird photographer arrived – Adam, who I had met before at various sites.

Superb Fairy-wren

Osprey

I accompanied Adam back down to the rock platform area. Now the tide was fairly high.

White-bellied Sea Eagle

An Osprey appeared and seemed to try and chase off the Sea Eagle from its territory.

Then the Osprey started fishing.

it pulled out from its dive.

Another dive, and another pull out before hitting the water.

And another dive –

This time the Osprey did not pull out of its dive –

The dive had been unsuccessful. The osprey had no fish.

Then we saw two distant White-bellied Sea Eagles

And a last appearance from an Osprey

The light was staring to go, so it was time to leave. And many thanks to Adam for a lift back to the city.
