Raptors at Long Reef – 27 August 2023

This was another nice trip to Long Reef. This time most of my photos were of raptors. I did see a lot of the smaller migratory birds – but they were a long way out in the boulder section of the rock platform.

Here are some Crested Terns out on the rock platform –

The tide was going up, so after looking around on the rock platform, I went back up to the lookout. A Nankeen Kestrel was hunting. Sometimes there were two hunting in that area –

It dived out of sight, and returned with a small skink.

This time it caught a locust.

Now it has another skink.

It flew too close to a Willie Wagtail

Now it has caught another skink –

From the lookout, with binoculars, I spotted a Black-shouldered Kite perched on top of a tree at the Long Reef Surf Club. I started walking down that way. As I approached I saw it had left the tree and was hovering. It slowly approached –

I returned to the lookout, and went down to the rock platform level. Far out at sea, I spotted a White-bellied Sea Eagle

And then I spotted an Osprey, It was hunting for fish, a fair way out in the sea. I saw it dive and catch a fish. I was hoping it would fly past.

It got closer, but then turned and landed on the island.

I watched it eating the fish and hoped it would take off and come closer. It did when it was harassed by a lot of Silver Gulls.

This time it did fly past fairly close.
