Wises Track Walk – 4 September 2023

This was another wildflower walk in Royal National Park. The walk was led by Brian Everigham for the National Parks Association of NSW. Perhaps the main thing we were looking for this time was orchids.

In the party was Brian, Gary, Ian, Phillip and myself.

On the way to Wises Track, we stopped off at three other sites along the way to look for orchids and other wildflowers.

Stop 1 – Audley

Here we saw some of the orchids we had seen the week before – they were still out.

we also looked at this interesting plant – Leucopogon amplexicaulis

Stop 2

We briefly turned off the road onto a side road to look at some Waratahs.

Stop 3

We stopped again to look for some more orchids at a helipad.

Here we also found some Baura rubioides

And the orchids were Small Wax-lip OrchidsGlossodia minor –

Stop 4 – Wises Track

This was the main activity. We walked to the end of the track along the Karani Ridge and back.

This may be Drosera pygmaea

Drosera spatulata

Black-eyed Susan – Tetratheca neglecta

We were particularly pleased to see this Tall Leek Orchid in flower. Prasophyllum elatum

Brain had been watching this orchid for a few weeks waiting for it to flower.

Can you see the small insect on the bark of this Scribbly Gum?

It is a Black Flat-head LeafhopperStenocotis depressa, and is easier to see in this photo –

Small Wax-lip Orchid – Glossodia minor

Cymbidium suave (Orchid) – this flowers in October.

New Holland Honeyeater

We stopped to look at some Aboriginal sharpening grooves.

Dotted Sun Orchids – Thelymitra ixioides

Another carnivorous plant – a BladderwortUltricularia sp.

Bonnet Orchid – Cryptostylis erecta

And we found another Tall Leek Orchid in flower. Prasophyllum elatum.
