Birds at Barton Park – 5 September 2023

Barton Park, which includes Landing Lights Wetland is one of the regular places I visit for bird photography, as it is relatively close to where I live. It also often offers a different range of birds between visits. This morning visit – the highlight was a Black-shouldered Kite.

When I arrived, I saw a small flock of Galahs feeding on the grass in Riverine Park near the Spring St Canal.

Then I headed to the Landing Lights Wetland to see what was there. I was walking along the boardwalk, and then spotted a Black-shouldered Kite landing on the sewer vent.

I moved closer and got to better position, and then waited for it to fly.

It was hunting in the wetlands area, and moved about a bit to hover in different spots.

And then landed back on the vent.

I then photographed this Red-browed Finch

Back to the Kite –

It dived down out of sight, but dd not seem to catch anything.

It then flew out of the wetlands area. So I tuned my camera to some other birds –

Brown Honeyeater

Pied Stilts

I then headed to the old sporting fields, and I spotted the Black-shouldered Kite again. It was hunting a lot away off, but it was gradually coming closer, so I waited.

It then headed off. After visiting the end of the Spring St Canal at Muddy Creek and checking the work on the new cycleway (it is almost finished), I then headed back to the wetlands. I was looking for the Spotted Crake, when all of a sudden all the Pied Stilts took off.

I suspected a raptor was nearby, and I soon spotted a Brown Goshawk. Unfortunately, I was on the wrong side of the wetlands to get good photos.

And a Little Egret

Tehn all the birds in the wetlands took off again. This time it was not a raptor, but a surveyor. I had talked to him earlier – he was doing survey for Bayside Council as part of the Barton Park redevelopment.
