On my last visit to Taronga Zoo – I had wanted to see the newly renovated Nocturnal House. But when we arrived – we found it had not opened due to a faulty electricity supply. But now it was finally open, and I had a very pleasant visit, and was accompanied by Sue.
When we arrived , we made our way to the Nocturnal House, and we went via the Australian Animal section.
Wallaby
Emu
Koala
Then to the Nocturnal House. It was quite impressive. A school group walked through and probably saw very little. This is one place you need to take your time and walk through slowly if you want to see a good range of animals. And it is very dark. You need to spend at least ten mounts allowing your eyes to adjust.
Here are some of the animals we saw –
This is one of the Spotted Quolls –
The are Ghost Bats – and their enclosure was so dark, that we could not see them. But a wide aperture camera lens (f 1.4) could.
I think this is a Fat-tailed Dunart –
Bilbies –
Potoroo
Platypus
Yellow-belied Greater Gliders
We then visited the Blue Mountains Bushwalk.
Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater
Cunningham’s Skink
Regent Honeyeater
Rock Wallaby
Scaly-breasted Lorikeet
Bush Stone-Curlew
Zebra Finch
At the bottom of the Blue Mountains Bushwalk, there was a new aviary –
Turquoise Parrot
Diamond Firetail
Freckled Duck
Then was passed there Gorillas –
Squirrel Monkey
A new Reptile and Amphibian House is being constructed, so we through we should make visit to the old one before is shuts.
The Lions were all sleeping, but this Sumatran Tiger was cooling off in a pool –
Then to the Rainforest Aviary –
Forest Kingfisher
Noisy Pitta
On our way to the ferry wharf, we passed the Binturongs – one was active –
And lastly the Red Pandas –
We had a very pleasant day observing the animals. Thanks to Sue for great company.
