I had come down with a cold, and was feeling a bit lazy, so only did short local trip. I thought I would look at the local Tawny Frogmouths to see how their nesting was going.
At Morton Park on Canterbury Road, Lewisham, I soon located the Tawny Frogmouth nest. It s very high in a tree and difficult to photograph. This is the best view I could get –
I cannot see any evidence of any chicks. But the view is only a partial one. The bird has been sitting on the nest for over a month now.
Then I caught a bus along Canterbury Road to the Cooks River at Canterbury. I was soon at The Boat Harbour and located the Tawny Frogmouth family –
I then walked over the bridge and up to the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands. I scanned all the ponds carefully to see if I could spot the Buff-banded Rail again – but had no luck.
I saw this Turtle –
Anda Little Pied Cormorant –
Back at The Boat Harbour, I watched the Tawny Frogmouths again. They were more active now.
One of the juveniles started to stretch its wings.
This started their father off. he too had a stretch.
Then it was Mum’s turn –
The second juvenile had a big yawn –
Then i walked upstream to Ewen Park. The Tawny Frogmouth chick seems to be doing well –
As I was leaving, I saw this tail –
It was a Ring-tailed Possum. It was fast asleep, in a fork of a tree, only about 4m up the tree.
