It was a bit of a wet day, but I decided to make a visit to Rookwood Necropolis to check on the progress of the nesting Brown Goshawks, and to photograph any other birds I could see.
It was quite wet – but only light rain. I ended up walking around with an umbrella a fair bit.
I soon spotted the Brown Goshawk nest. One of the chicks was perched near it.
Here is a White-plumed Honeyeater –
I moved around a bit to try and get a better view of the nest. I still could only see the one chick.
Then I spotted an adult perched nearby in a pine tree.
A bit later, I spotted either the same adult or its partner –
After looking in vain for small birds, I came back when I heard a Brown Goshawk calling.
It had a mouse. I think may have been calling in order to encourage the chicks to fly over for some food. I think the chicks are very close to fledging.
The parent was still calling out – and in view of the nest.
Still only one chick visible at the nest –
The parent flew around a bit, perching nearby with its prey.
The rain seemed to be getting worse. Before moving off, I had another look at the nest.
Now I could see two chicks.
I expect them to fledge very soon.
