A hot day was forecast. I was keen to get outdoors, but not keen to spend too long in the hot weather. So I decided to do short local walk along the Two Valleys Track – along Wolli Creek downstream from Bexley North and see how far I got before heading home.
In the end, I only walked to Girrahween Park at Earlwood. It was rather hot, and the birds were not that active. Here are a few birds I did see –
Red Wattlebird
Red-whiskered Bulbul
And a Water Skink at Paperbark Creek.
A New Holland Honeyeater –
At Girrahween Park, I had seen a single Tawny Frogmouth previously, and I always look out for them when I am there. This is the first time I have seen them nesting –
I have seen other people’s photos of Tawny Frogmouth together with chicks taken in Girrahween Park, and not been able to spot them. So, it is nice to actually see a nest. But for Tawny Frogmouths, it is rather late in the season for them to nest, so perhaps this nest is unsuccessful – and the bird is just sitting on enviable eggs? But also, they can nest twice in a season.
The other bird I am on the lookout for along that part of Wolli Creek is a Powerful Owl. I have seen evidence for them (whitewash on the ground).
