Brown Goshawks at Rookwood Necropolis – 12 December 2023

After the Mudlarks Bird Survey, Simin suggested a visit to Rookwood Necropolis to see the Brown Goshawk family. This sounded like a good idea.

On the walk in, we spotted a Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike with prey. Probably a cicada.

And we soon spotted one of the juvenile Brown Goshawks.

And we soon located all three chicks.

The juveniles we all constantly calling out – probably for food. This made them very easy to locate. They would often fly to a different spot – perhaps a place they throught closer to where one of the their parents would bring in some food.

A parent did fly past –

And one of the juveniles flew after it, calling as it went by.

We didn’t stay too long, as we thought that perhaps our presence was preventing the parents bringing in food.

Many thanks to Simin for a lift to Rookwood and for suggesting I join her. It is a real privilege to watch these young birds.
