Dargans Creek Canyon (and a visit to Pondi Beach) – 12 January 2024

It was time for another canyon. I headed up the mountains with Bob, with the plan to visit Dargans Creek Canyon. When we stopped for break on the way up at Lawson, the weather was quite cool, and it was a bit grey and misty. But as we approached Bell, the weather improved, and warmed up.

It had been a fair while since we had visited the Dargans Creek Dam Reserve and the canyon, and things had changed a lot. New barriers and fences had gone up.

We were soon on our way.

The upper approach is a bit slow along the creek but it is not too far.

It was time to waterproof our gear.

This is the start of the first really wet section – with a few short swims.

Not long after this, the canyon formation starts.

And it is at the bottom of the drop that Bob is at the top of where the best part of the canyon is –

The photos above were taken on a phone camera. Now it was time to get out a proper camera and tripod.

This is a really nice section of canyon.

Bob had gone on ahead while I was photographing. It was time for me to move downstream.

This is the start of the last long swim –

And that takes you to the final chamber of the canyon – a magnificent place. Back out with the camera and tripod.

WE then started the climb out.

The steel pegs in the tree still seem to be OK, although the tree has grown outwards somewhat. I have no idea when or who placed these spikes, but it was before 1960.

We stopped for lunch on the track out.

On the way home, Bob was keen to have a look at the new beach at Penrith – the one known as “Pondi”. So we detoured towards Penrith and the lakes area to have a look. The water was clean and pleasant for swimming.
