More Aboriginal Art on West Head – 4 July 2024

With more wet weather forecast, Bob and myself decided on another visit to West head to continue looking for Aboriginal sites.

Wet rock platforms make the often very faint engravings much easier to discern. So that was a good reason to visit the headland again.

We started off near where we had finished on our previous visit. We had only found one small engraving of a kangaroo at the last area we had visited on that day (see above photo). We knew there was a lot more  to look for.

This was the first platform we looked at –

There was a faint engraving of a figure. It seems to be wearing a headdress, so perhaps a deity –

the kangaroo engraving, shown on the first photo, is just in front of Bob in the photo below. It is a very small platform.

Some nice tessellations –

Another engraving –

This one could be an eel or shark –

This on sparkly obscured -a human figure –

There were some nice views –

There we’re a lit more engravings nearby –

Many of them were fish.

Here is a mundoe (footprint engraving) –

Bob is checking out a nearby platform –

I find this lizard engraving –

We speculate about these marks on some of the rocks. They look like the ones that Red Triangle Slugs make when they graze on the smooth bark of trees such as Blue Gums. Perhaps slugs also graze on the lichen on rocks?

And some more fish –

A bit further away is this shield engraving –

We then moved to a different rock platform. This one is very special with human figures and a large deity.

Human figure –

Here is the large engraving of a spirit figure – perhaps Daramulan (Baiame) –

And another human figure –

The next site was a small overhang.

This contains some hand stencils –

We then headed to the lookout for a view.

Lion Island

Barrenjoey

Meanwhile a White-bellied Sea Eagle flew past –

We had time to check out one more area. With a bit of effort, we eventually spotted an engravings. Perhaps a fish –

And then a clearer fish –

Not too far away, but on a different rock was this small human figure –

The day had been very interesting.
