Cooks River Tawny Frogmouths – 2 August 2021

Jennifer, a friend,  who lives near the Boat Harbour on the Cooks River, had taken a nice video of the resident Tawny Frogmouths perched near her house. I thought a visit to the Boat Harbour during the late afternoon could be nice for exercise and also to watch the Tawny Frogmouth as they awoke from their daily slumber.

Cooks River and Barton Park Bike Ride – 2 August 2021

Day 37 of lockdown. My exercise was another bike ride down to Barton Park and back, and as usual I took my camera.

Cooks River Birds – 1 August 2021

Cooks River and Barton Park Birds – 31 July 2021

Day 35 of lockdown. I decided to return to the Cooks River for a bike ride out to Barton Park and back.

Stotts Reserve, Coolibah Reserve and Shephard Reserve – 30 July 2021

Day 34 of lockdown. This was a good opportunity to catch up with Valerie for some exercise walks and to visit three small reserves new to me.

We met up at Stotts Reserve at Bexley North. This is a small bushland remnant hidden in the middle of suburbia. Its entrance is through a small area along Slade Road. You need to look out for this sign – Continue reading →

Cooks River Bike Ride – 29 July 2021

Day 33 of lockdown. Another exercise beak along the Cooks River. This time it was a bike ride with Digi Dave. I took a camera with me and took a few photos of the birds we saw along our ride.

We met at the bridge near the old Sugar Mill, and we first rode upstream along the southern bank. We rode up to Canterbury Road, then crossed the river and went downstream on the north bank. Continue reading →

Cooks River and Barton Park Bike Ride – 28 July 2021

Day 32 of lockdown. My exercise for the day was a morning bike ride along the Cooks River to Barton Park and back. As usual, I packed a camera.

No Sacred Kingfishers this time. I wonder if they are still around? They migrate to coastal mangrove areas during winter, and with recent warm weather perhaps they are moving back to the usual territories. But, I think a more likely explanation is they are not out feeding due to the high tide. They may have been out much earlier in the morning. Continue reading →

Cooks River Birds – 27 July 2021

Day 31 of lockdown. A short exercise walk in the afternoon to the Cooks River. This time I walked upstream to the Boat Harbour, then crossed over and walked up to Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands, then back downstream.

Cooks River and Barton Park Birds – 26 July 2021

Day 30 of lockdown. Another exercise bike ride – and again along the Cooks River Cycleway to Tempe and then to Barton Park and back. As usual I took my camera and recorded some of the birds I saw along the way.

And, as usual, I kept a lookout for Sacred Kingfishers. None near Illawarra Road, but at Gough Whitlam Park, I was walking along looking in the mangroves when two flew out all of sudden and took off up the river. I saw where one landed and was able to get a few photos. Continue reading →
