I went on an afternoon walk down Wolli Creek between Bexley North and Tempe. There had been some reasonable rain in recent days and I was expecting some fungi to be out, but the fungi turned out to be very dissapointing.
What were good, however were the orchids. I found lots of Greenhood Orchids or two different species out all the way along the valley. Continue reading
I had long wanted to visit the lookouts on the east side of the Nepean Gorge. They were once place I had not been to. I have been to several lookout on the western side – The ones above Lapstone, Mt Portal and also Nepean View Lookout at the end of the Esrkine Creek fire trail.
I had suggested a trip there to Bob, and it had been on list of possible trips for a while. Now was the time to do it. We thought it would not take too long, so we also had some nearby places to visit – Bents Basin and Nortons Basin. As it turned out, Bents Basin was closed due to flood damage. So after the visit to the Nepean Lookouts, we went to Nortons Basin. This made for an interesting day. Continue reading
After visiting the Chatswood fungi area, I walked down to the Lane Cove River, then headed downstream, past the golf course and along the track to the sporting field near Epping Road. On the way, I was on the lookout for birds, but didn’t see or hear too many.
When I arrived at nest area, I spotted one Osprey siting in the nest. It looks pretty settled, and so I waited around to see if it would take-off or its mate would return, perhaps with a fish. While I waited I had my lunch. The weather was not the best – cool and overcast with the threat of rain. And poor photographic light. Continue reading
I made another visit to Chatswood to get a progress update on the fungi. I first visited Ferndale Park, then walked to nearby Blue Gum Reserve (Blue Gum Creek), and then later walked down the Lane Cove River to see how the nesting Ospreys were going.
The fungi at both places was quite reasonable. It had been raining during the past week – but it was probably too soon for that rain to have an effect. Continue reading
A very pleasant day walking around the tracks of Oatley Park and Lime Kiln Bay. I was joined by Valerie, Sue B and Sue W. Showers had been forecast, but none fell while we were walking or having lunch.
We met at the carpark at the sporting field and started off on the track that descended to Jew Fish Bay. We then walked around past the shark nest and followed the track around the point. Then we walked down the road to Lime Kiln Bay, crossed the wooden bridge, and followed the track around the west side of Lime Kiln Bay Wetlands before walking back up to the carpark. Then it was lunch at the nearby picnic table, before heading to Oatley for coffee. Continue reading
After a bit of hesitation about where to go for a walk, I decided to catch a train to Thornleigh, then walk down to the Lane Cove River and follow it as far as Browns Waterhole, then exit via Terrys Creek.
I thought a fair bit of fungi should be out, an indeed I did find a lot as soon as I hit the river at the bottom of Lorna Pass. But below that the fungi was patchy, and Terrys Creek was relatively poor. However, there was an abundance of orchids all along the Lane Cove River. Continue reading
I enjoyed an interesting morning at Tempe with the Tempe Birdos for their monthly bird survey. This time, and for the first time, I joined the group surveying at the Reserve rather than the wetlands.

After a nice cafe lunch in Dulwich Hill with Roger and Digi Dave, I joined Digi Dave for a bird photography session at Barton Park.

It had been a while since I had walked all the section of the coast from Bronte to La Perouse. Bob suggested this as the next stage of series of Sydney coastal walks (we had done the walk from Kurnell to Cronulla not long before). It was also oa good time for coast al walking with a good chance of seeing whales.
We met up at Bronte Beach, and then set off along the Coastal Path. Continue reading
