This was another pleasant day spent in the Northern Beaches area. I started off at Warriewood Wetlands and the neighbouring Irrawong Reserve, then visited some nearby sport fields, and then visited Long Reef for the low tide.

This was an interesting bird photography morning. First I joined the Tempe Birdos for their monthly bird survey. Then, after morning tea, I cycled to Barton Park and Landing Lights Wetland, and then went home via the Cooks River to check out the nesting Tawny Frogmouths.

The week before, I had been on a walk wth Bob looking for Aboriginal heritage sites in the Blue Mountains. On that trip, we had started with a lot of hope, but had met no success. It was now time to have another look for the same site – an art cave – but from a different start point.
Where we looked this time, was a fair way from the previous week’s location, and this time we did not use a possible grid reference, but instead followed my choice for likely location based on a few clews we had from an earlier party to visit it. I was quietly confident that I had decode the clues and now knew the location. it all seemed to fit. But its different out in the bush than in front of the computer looking at maps and air photos. Like the week before, it was another very hot day, and it was quite enervating climbing out of gorges and walking along scrubby ridges. And, like the week before we had no success. Continue reading
One place I had never visited in Sydney was the Chinese Garden in Darling Harbour. I recently had the opportunity when catching up with an old bushwalking friend, Jodie, and her young daughter.
These gardens are very beautiful and certainly a very peaceful place. Entry costs only a few dollars. There is a number of paths to follow that twist around pools and thickets of trees and bamboo. Continue reading

The passing whales at Malabar Headland are declining in number, but the juvenile Peregrine Falcons are still putting on some amazing displays of flying. And a few Sea Eagles and Kestrels add to the show.

This was another walk I did with Bob, in a series to try and locate some Aboriginal heritage sites in the Blue Mountains. In particular, on the trip we were looking for cave art.
We had done some research into possible likely areas to visit, and Bob had been able to obtain a grid reference to what could be a very good site. The trouble was, that it was a long walk to it and then back to where we parked Bob’s car. It was also a rather hot day. We didn’t have too many big hills to climb was we would be following a ridge, at first along a fire road, and then along an overgrown fire road, and then through bush to get to where we hope the site was. I once again joined Brian Everingham on one his walks for the National Parks Association. This one was from Berowra to Cowan Creek and then and ascent to Mt Kuring-gai.
In the party was Brian, Sue, Paul, Valerie, Amanda, Andrew and myself. We left Berowra Station and crossed the railway line and the motorway and entered Ku-Ring-gai Chase National Park and followed the track down to Waratah Creek. This is a pleasant descent as the track takes gentle incline with a number of switchbacks. In places there are fine views. Continue reading
