Birds in Ku-Ring-Gai National Park and the Northern Beaches – 23 July 2019

This was a day of bird photography at several venues. I started by catching a train to Gordon and then a bus to Ingleside. From there, I walked out along the Chiltern Trail. There I main photographed honeyeaters. In the early afternoon, I caught a bus down to Mona Vale and then another to Warriwood where I photographed some larger birds including raptors.

The Chiltern Trail was noisy with bird calls, but many of the birds were shy, and hard to photograph. Here are some of the birds I saw. Continue reading →

More Birds at Malabar Headland – 22 July 2019

I spent another day in Malabar Headland National Park photographing the birds. There were also a few whales around, but they were a lot quieter this visit compared to my previous one.

Again, the main focus was trying to photograph the Peregrine Falcons. But I was also lucky to spot two other raptors. Near the car park, while I was walking out to the park entrance, I spotted a Nankeen Kestrel sitting on the top of a pole. Continue reading →

Lane Cove River Fungi – Revisit 2 – 19 July 2019

This was another trip to check out the Parrot Waxcaps (Gliophorus psitacinus var. psittacinus) that are found in a small moist area along the Lane Cove River. I found them still out, a bit drier, but not that much different from my previous visit. I also photographed some fo the interesting coral fungi that is found in the same spot.

Fungi at Coachwood Glen – 18 July 2019

I spent an interesting day looking for fungi at Coachwood Glen with Liz Kabanoff. Conditions were quite dry and we had to search very thoroughly to find what we did. Coachwood Glen is just off the Megalong Valley Road, not too far from Blackheath.

Birds of the Northern Beaches – 17 July 2019

I was intending to make another visit to Malabar Headland National Park to photograph the Peregrine Falcons and the passing whales, but the eastern part of the park was closed due to a Shooting Festival at the adjacent rifle range. So instead, I caught a bus up to the Northern Beaches.

I made my way to the sea cliffs, to a spot where I had seen Peregrine Falcons in the past. Where they back and ready to breed. It looks like the answer was yes. I spotted one sitting on the cliffs. I waited to see if it would take off. It seemed pretty settled, then another Peregrine Falcon flew past. The first one then took off. Continue reading →

Lane Cove River Fungi – Revisit – 16 July 2019

Like the day before, I made a second visit to a small section of the rainforest along the Lane Cove River to check out how some fungi had changed and also to get more photographs for some of the other fungi nearby.

This time I wanted to further observe the Parrot Waxcaps, the ones we think are Gliophorus psittacinus var. psittacinus. In the past, I have seen them change to a yellow-orange colour. I don’t think they had changed that much, some had dried out. Continue reading →

Wolli Creek – Revisit – 15 July 2019

I made a second visit to Wolli Creek, mainly in order to see how some of the fungi had changed – in particular the Humidicutis viridimagentea. I was expecting to have changed to a magenta hue. When I checked the specimens, I found some had changed slightly, others have dried out a fair bit, and some seemed much the same. There was one fresh one.
