I spent an amazing day of bird photography in the Northern beaches area. The main bird I photographed were Eastern Ospreys.
I caught a B-line bus to Warriewood and walked to one of the sporting fields near Narrabeen Lagoon where I had seen an Osprey nest on previous visits. As soon as I arrived, I could see at least one fo the birds was there. And it was active – going for short flights. I was able to get some reasonable photos. Continue reading
I was able to attend a celebration day at Lithgow organised by Janine Kitson for the Gardens of Stone Alliance and the Colong Foundation to pay tribute to the life and work of Vern and Joyce Moffitt. The Moffitts were strong unionists and environmentalist based at Lithgow and the first to propose protecting the pagoda landscapes of the Gardens of Stone.
A large number of retired unionists and conservationists, after arriving at Lithgow, then travelled by bus to the lookout at Dobbs Drift. This is a beautiful pagoda area overlooking Lithgow. Continue reading
I spent an interesting afternoon at Barton Park photographing the birdlife. It was a good day for raptors.
I cycled there, and first visited the Landing Lights Wetland. It was quiet. The quietest I have ever seen it. No ducks, no stilts, no avocets. Only two White-faced Herons. Continue reading

I had an interesting day in the Lane Cove Valley. I started out at Ferndale Park at Chatswood, where I checked out the fungi. Then I continued down the track along Swaines Creek to the Lane Cove River and then along the riverside track towards Epping Road. Along the way I stopped to photograph a nesting pair of Eastern Osprey.

I spent a very pleasant day out at Malabar Headland National Park. It is whale watching season, and I ddi see quite a few whales. I also saw that both Peregrine Falcons were around – it must be their breeding season.

Back from Tasmania, I was keen to check out the local fungi. It seems there had been some rain while I away. My first visit was to Wolli Ck.
On this visit I caught a bus to Earlwood, walked down to Girrahween Park, and then followed the Two Valleys Track upstream for a bit, then walked back down and ended up at Turrella Reserve, and from there walked to nearby Turrella Station. I was pleased to be able to join my sister Alicson, for a walk along The Overland Track. Her husband, Shane, was originally coming along as well, but a knee injury not long before the walk, meant he would be wise to stay at home. But we were very grateful for his help with the logistics – driving us to the start at Lake St Clair and picking us up at Cradle Mountain.
In winter, there is no need to book a spot on the track, or pay a fee, and you can do the walk in the usual North to South direction, or do it, as we intended to do, from South to North. Continue reading
This was perhaps the best day of fungi hunting that I went on in Tasmania. It was to a place – Castra Falls, near Preston, that I had not been to before. I was accompanied by my sister and brother in law. the weather on the day was poor – and sometimes we were walking and photographing under umbrellas.
