Still more bad weather in Tasmania preventing us from heading to the mountains. On this day, I made a short visit with my sister to Dooelys Hill at Latrobe. We managed to find a fair bit of fungi before rain hit.

Philosophers Falls, near Waratah, in the Tarkine, is an excellent place for observing fungi. We found a lot of fungi out, and we found our time used up and we didn’t even make the falls this time.

I had been invited to visit my sister and her husband in Tasmania for some bushwalking. While waiting for some bad weather to finish we did a number of short trips near where they live at West Ulverstone. The first was at the Ferndene Reserve at the base of the Dial Range at Penguin. The fungi was quite good.

I was very saddened to hear of the recent passing of an old bushwalking friend, Tony Norman. He perhaps should be addressed as Dr Anthony Norman. But to his bushwalking mates, and probably many other of his friends, he was known as “Norm”. He died suddenly at his home in Melbourne, I think while working at his computer, at the age of 59.

I first got to know Norm in the late 1970’s when he joined Sydney University Bushwalkers. As well as bushwalking, climbing and canyoning, his other passion was geology. This was what he studied and made his career. His work took him to many remote parts of the planet. Continue reading
Strattons Amphitheatre is a cave, in the Springwood area, possibly an aboriginal site, that has some old graffiti on one of its walls. As well as the cave, there is also a waterfall, and the creek there flows in a deep gorge – almost a canyon. Bob and myself set off to visit the Amphitheatre.

A wet day was forecast, and we certainly had some rain on the walk – but it was quite a pleasant outing. This was a walk led by Brian Everingham for the National Parks Association of NSW.
With the adverse forecast, some of the participants pulled out, but that still left – Brian, Paul , Sue, Valerie, Kay and myself. We had showers on and off most of the day, and there were plenty of wet bushes, and it was also quite cold. But not too much suffering was endured. The bush was beautiful. A number of wildflowers were out, the birds were singing (but not when my camera was out) and the sea was powerful. Very powerful indeed. It was the high sea that made the trip memorable. A wet day was forecast, so after attending to some business in the city, I thought I would try to the new North West Metro. So I caught a train to Chatswood and then boarded the metro.
The vehicle is quite different to the trains we have been used to or those on the Inner West Light Rail. It is composed of six carriages with no doors between them – so you look down one long passage. Chairs are only on the sides – so if it was full of people, then many would have to stand. It is a driverless train – there is no driver’s cabin, so you can stand at the front and look out at the rails. This is what I did. Continue reading
I had a very pleasant and interesting day at the Northern beaches photographing birds. I started by catching the B-Line Bus to Warriewood, and walking out to the Wetlands and then through Irrawong Reserve to Irrawong Falls and then back.

Bob and myself were heading up the mountains to go to a similar area that we had visited twice before in recent weeks. On those occasions we had looked for aboriginal sites without any luck. This time we had done some more thorough research and we had a better idea where to look.
We had been very close to some sites on both our previous trips, and we had not looked carefully enough. We soon located an interesting Aboriginal art cave. It features about 6 sets of white hand stencils and some other art. Continue reading
