Dalpura Canyon – 18 January 2024

Bob and myself decided to visit Dalpura Canyon. A reasonable day was forecast weather wise – not too hot. So Dalpura seemed a good choice.

We had a very pleasant day.

We set off from Bells Line of Road and were soon approaching the creek. Continue reading

More Kestrels at Barton Park – 17 January 2024

I made another visit to Barton Park hoping that there Nankeen kestrel that I had seen on my previous trips would still be around. Well – I found two Nankeen Kestrels.

When I arrived at the park, I first visited the Landing Lights Wetland – but  things seemed relatively quiet. Here is one of the Pied StiltsContinue reading

The Powerhouse Museum is due to shut down in a few weeks, so I talked about visiting it before it shits with Sue and Valerie. Valerie could not make it, but Sue could – and we had a most interesting visit.

More Wet Weather – More Local Birds. Sydney Park and Barton Park – 15 January 2024

Another west day! Well the morning was quite wet, but it started to improve in the afternoon, so I headed out. My first stop was at Sydney Park at St Peters.

It was fairly quiet at the Park. The water level  was high in the ponds, so that perhaps reduced the chance of spotting at Rail or Crake. Also the vegetation near the ponds was very high due to the recent warm wet weather. Continue reading

Wolli Creek Birds – 14 January 2024

More local birds. The weather has a been quite wet in Sydney recently, so I have been taking advantages of breaks in the weather and then heading outside to some areas close to home.

I caught a bus to Earlwood and was soon walking down the path to Girrahween Park. Early on, I spotted an Eastern Rosella. Continue reading

Dargans Creek Canyon (and a visit to Pondi Beach) – 12 January 2024

It was time for another canyon. I headed up the mountains with Bob, with the plan to visit Dargans Creek Canyon. When we stopped for break on the way up at Lawson, the weather was quite cool, and it was a bit grey and misty. But as we approached Bell, the weather improved, and warmed up.

It had been a fair while since we had visited the Dargans Creek Dam Reserve and the canyon, and things had changed a lot. New barriers and fences had gone up. Continue reading

BIrdwood Gully – Fungi, Slime Moulds and Birds – 11 January 2024

My usual weekly bushwalk or canyoning trip with Bob had been shifted to Friday, so that left Thursday free for an outing. I had been looking att he rainfall data for various places to see if a fungi trip would be worthwhile. A fair bit of rain and been recorded falling at Springwood, so I decided to visit Birdwood Gully.

Rain was forecast in the early afternoon, so I left home before 7 am hoping to get up there at an early hour. But the Blue Mountains trains were running awry, and it took longer than I had anticipated. But in the end – it turned out hot and sunny rather than rain while I was there. At least it was quite cool in the shade of there gully.

The fungi was quite reasonable. Continue reading

Birds at Barton Park – 9 January 2024

After the Mudlarks bird survey, I joined three of the participants – Simin, Valerie and Georgie for a visit to Barton Park and Landing Lights Wetland. It was quite hot by this  stage of the day – and we didn’t see that many birds, but it was still a worthwhile visit.

Here’re some birds seen at the Wetlands – Continue reading
