White Rabbit Gallery and The Chau Chak Wing Museum – 28 September 2025

This was a day of culture. I had been wanting to visit the Chau Chak Wing Museum at Sydney University for a while, but had not given it a lot of priority. So I thought it about time to change this. WhenI looked a the website, I found that on Sundays, it opens at Noon, so that left a spot in the morning, and I thought a visit to the nearby White Rabbit Gallery would be good. Parramatta Cruise – 27 September 2025

A warm day was forecast, so Sue suggested a trip on the Harbour, and we met around 11 am at Circular Quay. A ferry was about to leave for Parramatta so we boarded it. The Rivercat was one with seats outside on the front, and that was a very pleasant place to be – we had great views anda nice breeze  all the way to Parramatta.

Landslide near Odin Head, Evans Lookout and Penrith Gallery – 26 Sep 2025

Bob and myself had seen recent photos on social media taken by Peter Raines near Flagstaff Hill on Bells Line Of Road, of a new landslide somewhere close to Victoria Falls. Peter determined that the landslide was probably at the end of there ridge between Victoria Brook and Victoria Creek. We were interested in having a closer look at the landslide, so we decided to walk out to the southern part of Odin Head.

Doug joined Bob and myself for the trip. We first visited Victoria Falls Lookout – where we got great views of the Grose Valley but we could not see the new landslide. Continue reading →

Malabar Headland – 24 September 2025

I spent a very enjoyable day out in Malabar Headland National Park with Sue and Valerie. We saw some great wildflowers and animals.

Probably the main aim was to see the Peregrine Falcons, and we did see at least one of the resident nesting pair. But only briefly.

Some Local (Cooks River) Birds – 23 September 2025

I was able to get out and walk along a short section of the Cooks River – between Illawarra Rad and Gough Whitlam Park, to see what birds were about. It was fairly quiet – there were no cormorants or other large water birds. I think I spotted only one Moorhen. NO kingfishers. But there were some parrots feeding on grass seeds at Gough Whitlam Park.

This one has ambiguous colouring, but probably an Eastern Rosella rather than a Crimson Rosella. Possibly a hybrid –

Spring at Mt Annan Botanic Gardens – 20 September 2025

I spent a very pleasant day with Sue and Valerie at the Australian Botanic Gardens at Mt Annan. Spring is a good time to see the magnificent flower display.

Malabar Headland – Raptors, Whales and Dolphins – 15 September 2025

I joined Sue for a nice day out on Malabar Headland, where we were later joined by Valerie. We also met two other bird photographers we knew – Adam and Philip.

Our main aim was to see the resident Peregrine Falcons. but we were also pleased to see any other raptors that may be around. And we spotted a Black-shouldered Kite near the National Park entrance. Continue reading →

Another day at Long Reef. This visit twas pretty average as visits there go. There were plenty of Osprey flying around, but for the most part they were not that active in diving for fish. It was high tide during my visit.

Visit to North Head – 13 September 2025

I was giving a talk on fungi to a group based at North Head, so after the Tempe Bird Survey I travelled into the city then caught a ferry to Manly, and then a bus to the Fairfax Lookout at North Head.
