I had an early start and joined the Mudlarks for their monthly bird survey along the Cooks River. This month the group were surveying upstream from the Lang St Bridge – to the Boat Harbour, then crossing over to the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands and then returning downstream on that side.

Here are some of the birds we saw –

Visit to the Maritime Museum – 8 January 2024

I joined John and his two boys, Jasper and Sebastian, and also Vivienne a friend of Sebastians, for a day at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour.

When we arrived and met up, we headed first to the HMAS Onslow – the submarine. A tour through this is very interesting, but if you leave it too late, then big queues can occur. Continue reading

An Afternoon at H V Evatt Park (and Oatley Park) – 7 January 2024

We had a trip planned to another reserve, but it was cancelled at the last moment, so four of us – Deb, Valerie, Sue and myself decided to visit H V Evatt Park at Lugano, then we made a quick visit to Oatley Park.

Once we arrived at H V Evatt Park, we had lunch at one of the picnic tables, then set off to see what was around the duck pond. There were certainly a lot of domestic ducks as well as Pacific Black Duck.  There were also a lot of Water DragonsContinue reading

More Birds at Sydney Olympic Park – 6 January 2024

I was keen to have another look for the Black-backed Bittern at the Narawang Wetlands at Newington, part of Sydney Olympic Park. So I went back, but again I had no luck spotting the bird. Like the previous visit, I also walked down to the Parramatta River and back.

Here are some of the birds I saw – Continue reading

Birds at Sydney Olympic Park – 3 January 2023

I decided to spend a day on the west side of Sydney Olympic Park seeing what birds were around. I started at the Narawang Wetlands and Newington, then walked down the path to Woo-la-ra, then I continued to the river path on the Parramatta River where I had lunch. Then I walked back the same way.

At Narawang Wetlands, I spent a fair bit of time looking for Black-backed Bitterns. Several had been photographed the previous day, but on my visit they were not active at all while I was there. Continue reading

Back to Rookwood – 2 January 2023

Valerie had invited both Sue and myself to lunch at her place, and as an after lunch activity, I suggested a visit to Rookwood Necropolis to see the juvenile Brown Goshawks.

It was a warm afternoon. and a lot of the birds at the Necropolis were not active. We eventual spotted one of the juvenile Brown Goshawks, but it did not give us many opportunities to observe it. I was lucky to get a few slight shots – Continue reading

Some Local Birds – Morton Park and The Cooks River – 1 January 2024

On New Years Day, I did a short local walk, first to Morton Park, on Canterbury Road at Lewisham, thenI  caught a bus to Canterbury, where I met up with Valerie for a slow walk along the Cooks River where we looked for birds.

At Morton Park, I was surprised to see a Tawny Frogmouth still sitting on its nest. It seems to have been sitting on the nest for quite a while now – several months. Is it sitting on non-viable eggs? Or perhaps the female has laid a set of new eggs? More observations are needed. Continue reading

It turned out to be overcast all the day, but it was quite warm and very humid. Continue reading

The Brown Goshawks at Rookwood – 30 December 2023

I made another trip to Rookwood Necropolis in order to see how the young Brown Goshawks were doing, and to see if I could get any better photos (in particular photos of them in flight).

It was another fairly warm and humid day. The only birds I saw when I arrived where some White-throated Needletails flying high above – Continue reading
