Fungi at Wolli Creek – 27 April 2025

A few days earlier, I had done a bird trip in Wolli Creek Regional Park. Now, I was keen to visit the park again to see how the fungi was going after recent rain.

I found a reasonable amount out, including some waxcaps. Here is a selection of what I found – Continue reading

Greenway Bird Survey – 26 April 2025

I attended the local bird survey along the Dulwich Hill section of The Greenway.

Rain was threatening, and we did have some light drizzle. Perhaps this was why it wa a bit quiet compared to previous surveys. Here are some of the birds we saw. Continue reading

Bushwalking Near Woy Woy – 25 April 2025

A while back I had suggested to Bob that it could be worth visiting the old Mullet Creek Culvert, near the western portal of the Woy Woy Railway Tunnel. And separately, I had also suggested a visit to the “secret waterfall” near the eastern portal of the same tunnel. The time had come to visit these places, and it did not look too hard to visit them both on the same day.

Bob had also researched some Aboriginal art sites that we could visit along the way.

Bob parked on the Woy Woy Road, at the start of the Tunnel Hill Firetrail (which is just past the large quarry). And we were soon walking towards the top of the Woy Woy Railway Tunnel. Continue reading

Back to Lime Kiln Bay (and Oatley Park and The Blackbutt Trail) – 24 April 2025

After my recent trip to Lime Kiln Bay, friends Valerie and Sue were keen to see the Boobook Owl. Another bird species we were hoping to see were Rose Robins. Well, we didn’t see the Boobook Owl, but we did see a Powerful Owl.

Also, we had good encounters with Rose Robins.

Some Birds Along Wolli Creek – 23 April 2025

I made a short morning visit to Wolli Creek Regional Park, to photograph some of the birds there. I started off near Paperbark Creek, then walked downstream to near the rock climb crags and then walked back to Earlwood.

The birds seemed quite active while I there. It had been raining, but now the sun was out.

Near Paperbark Creek there were quite a few Grey FantailsContinue reading

Another Day at Nurragingy Reserve – 21 April 2025

I met up with Sue and we travelled out to Doonside for anther day at Nurragingy Reserve. On the previous visit, we had spent a fair bit of time observing the Azure Kingfishers. This visit was dominated by pair of Pacific Bazas.

When we arrived, we soon spotted the group of four Tawny Frogmouths. Here are two of them – Continue reading

Long Reef – 20 April 2025

I thought another day at Long Reef would be worthwhile. This visit the tide in the middle of the day would be high, so I would not be able to walk out onto the rock platform while there. But, there should be Ospreys. And there were.

As I was walking down to the lower level from the lookout on the Headland, I spotted an Osprey flying towards where I was. And it had a nice fish. Continue reading

Birds at Lime Kiln Bay – 19 April 2025

I thought it may be worthwhile visiting Lime Kiln Bay, and nearby Oatley Park to look for birds to photograph. It certainly was worthwhile.

I walked to Lime Kiln Bay Reserve from Mortdale Station, and then unpacked my camera and binoculars and started looking to see what was around.

This is the first bird I spotted. I think it is a juvenile Fan-tailed CuckooContinue reading

Birds at Barton Park and Sydney Park – 18 April 2025

I visited two venues to see what birds were around. First Barton Park, where I spent most of my time at Landing Lights Wetland, then caught a bus up to St Peters and visited Sydney Park.

Here is how the trip went.

When I walked down the Spring St Canal at Barton Park, I spotted this Little Black Cormorant – Continue reading

Birds at Nurragingy Reserve – 16 April 2025

Sue joined me for another very good day of bird watching and photography at Nurragingy Reserve at Doonside. This visit, it was a pair of Azure Kingfishers that dominated our day.

I was also fortunate in being able to get some reasonable flight shots.

When we arrived, we first looked at the duck ponds to see what birds were there. We spotted this fresh stinkhorn coming up. Continue reading
