Malabar Headland – 8 November 2023

My friend Sue had visited Malabar Headland on Monday, and had little luck seeing any action from the Peregrine Falcons. I was concerned that their nest may have failed – so after talking to Sue, we decided on a late afternoon trip to try and work out what was going  on.

I walked in from Malabar, and Sue walked in from Maroubra Beach and we met on the cliffs. We looked carefully around the cliffs – but could not spot any Peregrine Falcons while we were there. It was quite windy – and we didn’t feel like staying too long.

I thought that if the Peregrine Falcons were feeding any chicks in their nest – then it would be likely that we would have seen one of  them at least bringing in prey. And if there are chicks – then they should have fledged already or be very close to fledging by this time. Continue reading →

Cooks River Tawny Frogmouths – 8 November 2023

After the Greenway Bird Survey, I talked Valerie into joining me on a walk down the Cooks River to look for the Tawny Frogmouths. So we caught the light rail to Dulwich Hill, and then the train to Canterbury Station, and were soon walking downstream.

We looked in the trees in the Close St Reserve, and had no luck finding any Tawnies. So we continued down to the Boat Harbour – where we  had more luck. We soon found the family  of two parents and two chicks. Continue reading →

Nurragingy Reserve – 7 November 2023

I decided it was about time to visit Nurragingy Reserve again. So I caught a  train to Doonside and was in the Reserve a little after 8 am.

Forest Path and Walumurra Track – 6 November 2023

I once again joined Brian Everingham and party on a walk he was leading for the National Parks Association of NSW in Royal National Park. This time we walked around the Forest Path and then along Bola Creek, via the Walumurra Track – and continuing up the hill to the fire trail, and along that for a kilometre or so before returning back down to Bola Creek, and then back to the carpark via Lady Carrington Drive.

Back to Sydney Park – 5 November 2023

It had been raining during the morning, but when the rain looked like it was clearing, I decided to head back to Sydney Park for an hour or two of bird photography.

This visit, I didn’t see any unusual birds – except brief glimpses of some Rails. Walking around, I heard the calls of a male Pacific Koel. I soon spotted the bird. Continue reading →

Birds at Sydney Park and Barton Park – 4 November 2023

Some rain was forecast, but the rain radar revealed it was not too widespread, so I thought of visiting Rookwood. But railway track work would mean a slow trip, so inserted I decided to visit Barton Park. But this time – the bus came a little early, so again, I changed destinations to Sydney Park. From there  I could also catch a bus to Barton Park later in the day if the rain held off.

Local Birds Update – Morton Park and The Cooks River – 3 November 2023

With wet weather forecast, I was keen to get out, but thought it best not to venture to far away, so decided to repeat the trip I did a week or so earlier. I first walked to Morton Park on Canterbury Road at Dulwich Hill to check out the nesting Tawny Frogmouths. I then caught a bus down Canterbury Road to the Cooks River, and walked downstream as far as Marrickville Golf Course before walking home. I did experience a little rain along the way.

At Morton Park, I soon located the Tawny Frogmouth nest, high a Casuarina Tree. It is very hard to get a good look, with binoculars or telephoto lens, but I could see no sigh of chicks. Continue reading →

Malabar Headland – 2 November 2023

I was keen to visit Malabar Headland again – as I thought it would be close to the time any chicks from the nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons would be fledging. On this visit I was meeting Sue out on the cliffs. She was walking in from Maroubra, and I was coming from Malabar.
