I made an afternoon visit to Narawang Wetlands at Newington in order to attempt to spot some of the Black-backed Bitterns (Australian Little Bittern). This time I had more success.

I spent a flair bit of time scouring the reads drinking the pools with binoculars. Eventually, I spotted a juvenile Black-backed Bittern –

I then moved a bit closer, and spotted two Buff-banded Rails foraging nearby –

The juvenile Black-backed Bittern had moved closer to the pond –

It then headed back into the reeds –

Some other bird photographers then arrived, and I showed them where I had seen the juvenile. There was no sign of it, but all of a sudden an adult Black-backed Bittern arrived –

It then headed out of sight into the reeds –

I was a lot happier this time than on my previous visit.
