Mudlarks Cooks River Bird Survey – 8 April 2025

It was time for the monthly bird survey with The Mudlarks along the Cooks River. This month the group was surveying the downstream loop from the Lang St Footbridge.

There was light rain as we set off from the footbridge, however the rain mainly held off while we were on the river.

From the footbridge, a Little Pied Cormorant –

A lot of birds were taking advantage of the wet conditions and foraging in the sporting fields.

Then there was some bedlam as a Brown Goshawk flew over –

We paused from our bird surveying briefly at the 17th T Bushcare site in the golf course. Doug Benson, one of the mangers of this site, was sewing some native grass. Others joined in.

What caused all these birds to take to the air? Probably a passing raptor. Some members of the group saw a Grey Goshawk fly past.

King Parrots

Back near the 17th T, I had missed seeing a Boobook Owl. Many thanks to Simin for taking me back to show me where it was. This is the first BooBook Owl I have seen on the Cooks River.

And as usual, the group finished off with a morning tea at Ewen Park.
