Long Reef – 20 April 2025

I thought another day at Long Reef would be worthwhile. This visit the tide in the middle of the day would be high, so I would not be able to walk out onto the rock platform while there. But, there should be Ospreys. And there were.

As I was walking down to the lower level from the lookout on the Headland, I spotted an Osprey flying towards where I was. And it had a nice fish.

This turned out to be the only Osprey I saw with a fish on my visit.

I had spotted another Osprey perched below. I walked around to the south side of the headland to get a better view.

Several other bird photographs were also there, i including Diana and Simon, who I know. We were all waiting for it to take off.

Meanwhile, three Royal Spoonbills flew high overhead.

Suddenly the Osprey we had been watching let out a cry.

And then it took off.

It had spotted a fish.

It had missed the fish.

Itr was interesting to watch the Osprey as it flew back. It was drying itself. Is it centrifuging the water off or wringing itself out?

It landed a short way further down the cliff.

It then took off and flew back to its original perch.

More waiting for another take-off

Another Osprey flew past.

It landed out on a rock near the island.

Then another Osprey flew past.

It was the one that was sitting on the perch. It had now returned.

A passing Pied Cormorant.

Then the Osprey took off.

Had it seen this White-bellied Sea Eagle?

It looked like the Osprey was looking for fish.

It flew past a paraglider.

And now there were three Ospreys.

Two of them interacted.

And then another White-belied Sea Eagle flew past.

The Osprey started harassing the Sea Eagle.

An interesting aircraft flew past. It was a RAAF Pilatus P-21.

The Sea Eagle was still around.

And again the Osprey flew in –

I was talking to another bird photographer, Adam, and we both noticed a nearby Silver Gull with a fish.

Down it goes!

It was staring to get late, so I walked up to the lookout with Adam, and we spotted more Ospreys from the lookout –

There was also a toy glider.

I then joined Adam and his brother Marion for dinner in the local RSL club, and then a lift back to the city. Many thanks!
