Another Day at Nurragingy Reserve – 21 April 2025

I met up with Sue and we travelled out to Doonside for anther day at Nurragingy Reserve. On the previous visit, we had spent a fair bit of time observing the Azure Kingfishers. This visit was dominated by pair of Pacific Bazas.

When we arrived, we soon spotted the group of four Tawny Frogmouths. Here are two of them –

The other tow were perched in branches above. Later, when we came past, the two together had separated.

We found very few birds along the perimeter fire road, so we spent some time at the ponds looking for Azure Kingfishers. No luck, but we did see this Little Pied Cormorant

And then we met up with Wayne, the local vlogger and Nature expert. We teamed up, and we eventually spotted an Azure Kingfisher

We got some better views when it moved down the far end of the pond.

Then we lost it.

We had also been looking for Pacific Bazas. In places the Noisy Miners were calling out, and we thought they may be harassing raptors, but we could not spot any.

Then, we spotted a Pacific Baza, and then a second nearby. Both were juveniles.  WE spent the next hour or so following them as they hunted for phasmids.

Back to the Pacific Bazas. This one has just caught a phasmid –

We finished off by looking for Azure Kingfishers. We had no luck, but we did see  this very tiny Water Dragon
