it had been a dull morning while I had been on the Greenway Bird Survey, but in the afternoon the weather fined up nicely, so I headed out for some local bird photography along the Cooks River. It was a very pleasant and worthwhile outing.

I caught buses to the River at Illawarra Road and then started walking downstream on the south side.
I spotted a Little Black Cormorant perched in a tree over the water.

As I walked closer, I saw a Sacred Kingfisher fly our from the same tree and it headed over to the far side of the river. I thought I had seen the flash of another Kingfisher chase it away. I waited bit, and a Sacred Kingfisher perched back on the same tree.

It was looking for mud crabs – it’s main food here.

It seems to have spotted a crab.

It flew down to the bank, out of sight, but then returned with a nice crab.

These crabs take a bit of “processing”

Down it goes. Nicely swallowed.

It then flew off downstream. I keep on my way.

On the walk back, I spotted a second Sacred Kingfisher. It was perched in the same tree the other one had been perched in earlier, but it had slightly different markings, so is a second bird. I thought I had seen two earlier at this spot.

Some nice action to finish off my visit.
Hi David, thanks for your beautiful photographs. I made a mosaic sort of inspired by one of them. Let me know if you’d like to see it.
