Aboriginal Art in the Lower Blue Mountains – 14 August 2025

Bob and myself decided to visit the Lower Blue Mountains to look at some Aboriginal art sites. Rain was forecast  for Sydney, but the lower Blue Mountains escaped the bad weather during our visit.

We visited four art sites.

The first site was a cave, not too far from a major sporting complex, and had suffered some vandalism (graffiti) over the years. A shame!

It had some charcoal motifs –

Some more motifs –

We then followed a nearby fire road out to a lookout.

Hovea linearis

Grevillea sp.

We got some view of wrecked cars pushed over the cliff –

Boronia sp.

The second cave, had more charcoal art. Here are three kangaroos –

Some more motifs, the lower part has exfoliated.

Another kangaroo –

This looks like a kangaroo and a boomerang –

Bob thought he may have found stone tool –

We then made our way back to Bob’s car.

The next site was a quite well hidden cave. It was dark inside and we had to use phone torches to see the art. A boomerang and lot of red ochre hadn’t stencils.

This was a very good site!

The fourth site was  a cave in a gully in a nearby town. It featured more charcoal art. There were two kangaroo motifs and a shield motif.

We then headed back up the ridge to Bob’s car. On the way I spotted this Greenhood Orchid.

On the way back too the city, we stopped off briefly at Agnes Banks to see a heritage horse trough –

It was another Bills Horse Trough –

One Response to Aboriginal Art in the Lower Blue Mountains – 14 August 2025

  1. Tim says:

The first site is actually relatively exposed, I’m a little surprised they chose this spot as a lot of other sites are well protected in shelters. The rubbish strewn around really kills it though… such a shame.
