Birds at Irrawong Reserve and Long Reef – 15 August 2025

I made another trip to the Northern Beaches, with the main focus being the Ospreys at Long Reef, but I first visited Irrawong Reserve at Warriewood to look for a Noisy Pitta that had been seen there recently.

I had no luck spotting the Noisy Pitta. I knew I was in the right place, and there were some other bird photographers around, and had been seen there earlier in the morning.  Here are a few other birds –

White-browed Scrubwren

Galah

Topknot Pigeons

Grey Fantail

Irrawong Falls

I then headed to Long Reef. When I walked down to the lower level, I saw an Osprey with a fish, not too far away on the beach –

Two pesky Silver Gulls arrived –

They annoyed the Osprey –

One of the Gulls grabbed a bit of the fish –

The Osprey decided to move.

I could see distant Humpback Whale

Sooty Oystercatchers

The another Osprey flew past. It had a small fish.

And a but later, another Osprey, with a larger fish, landed in the island –

It ate fair bit of the fish, then suddenly took off –

There was a White-bellied Sea Eagle

The Sea Eagle seems to have the tail of a fish –

It was time to head off, but when I reached the lookout, I spotted a Nankeen kestrel down on the golf course to the south. As I made my way down, I could not see it, but all of a sudden, tow Sulphur-crested Cockatoos noisy passed by and were swooped on bay a very fast Nankeen Kestrel

Perhaps the Kestrel and the Cockatoos are competing for nesting sites on the cliffs?
