Visit to Malabar Headland – I October 2025

I headed to Malabar Headland and was joined by Sue and later met up with Alana. We had a very pleasant day.

Near the National Park entrance gate near Maroubra Beach, we heard a number of Rufous Whistlers. We spotted a distant one –

Jacky Dragon

Copper Beard Orchid – Calochilus campestris

Bottlebrush

Near Boora Point, not long after we arrived around 12 noon, we saw a Peregrine Falcon fly past low down, and then saw it come back and land on the cliffs not too far away. It was the male.

It then took off –

That was all we saw of the Peregrine Falcon on this visit. It had perched on the cliffs for about 20 minutes. We assumed the female is sitting on eggs at their nest.

White waiting to see if the Peregrines would appear again, we saw plenty of Humpback Whales on the journey south.

And then a large pod of Dolphins went past –

And a lot more Humpback Whales

Earlier, Sue had spotted a Turtle, but I missed seeing it. But then we all saw a Seal

And another lot of Humpback Whales

Then we almost missed a Black-shouldered Kite fly past –

We started walking back to Maroubra Beach around 3:30 pm. On the way we spotted more orchids.

Slender Onion Orchid – Microtis parviflora

And Alana spotted a seal on the rocks at the bottom of Dead Mans Gulph –

And at Magic Point were two Nankeen Kestrels

This one was calling out to the other –

More calling.

And then the two landed close to each other –

This one, below,  is much paler and a bit larger. Perhaps a female (and the other is a male) –

And then they flew off –

It had been a nice day.
