Why Don’t We Do It In The Road Canyon – 20 December 2018

I was heading up the mountains with Bob for a day of canyoning. During the previous evening there had been some heavy rain in the mountains and we changed plans to visit Whungee Wheengee Canyon and instead do Why Don’t We Do It In The Road Canyon at Mt Wilson.

It was quiet when we left the Fire Station. The weather was warm and sunny. It later became very hot. On the track down to the canyon, we noticed fresh footprints, and encountered the other party at one of the early optional abseils.

We climbed around that one, and set up our rope lower down. A short abseil took us into the creek.

Then some pleasant walking down a beautiful fern filled valley for about twenty minutes to the start of the lower section of the canyon.

This has three abseils, the last of which is optional. Here is the first one of them –

This takes you down to a nice section of canyon –

And the start but awkward second abseil –

The canyon then opens up somewhat, and it is possible to climb out or around the nest abseil. But this abseil is the nicest in the canyon –

Some canyon formation –

And then you arrive at the Wollangambe Junction. It was early but its good place to stop for lunch.

We then followed the ledge to the pass out. The recent rain had put the level up in the Wollangambe a fair bit.

On the way out, I was pleased to spot a small cluster of Flying Duck Orchids –
