Birds at Landing Lights Wetland and Tempe – 24 March 2019

I spent a pleasant few hours cycling out to Barton Park and visiting the Landing Lights Wetland.

Dollar Bird

Not that many birds were out. The usual birds were there – Black-winged Stilts and some White-faced Herons. No Avocets this visit. I did spot a nice Black-fronted Dotterel. These small birds are usually very shy, but this one flew down quite close to me.

Here are some of the other birds there –

I then went down Muddy Creek to look for Fairy-wrens and Honeyeaters. Quite a few New Holland Honeyeaters were feeding in the area.

There were also a number of Red-browed Finches –

And the Silvereyes –

Slowly cycling back towards home, I spotted a very distant bird sitting on a pole in the golf firing range. With binoculars I could see it was a Dollar Bird. These are rare visitors to this area I think. It was soon joined by another.

Then one of them flew off and grabbed and insect.

One of the pair then flew a lot closer and landed on a Yagi array on a house near the cycleway.

And then another short flight looking for more insects.

On my way home I did a lap of Tempe Reserve. Not that many birds out. Here is a White-faced Heron catching something in the salt marsh.
